A cased portrait miniature of a lady painted in enamel on metal, signed to the back T/M 1875 for Thomas Herbert Maguire (1821-1895). Paper label attached reads: ‘JW Ingpen by T H Maguire 1876.

Thomas Herbert Maguire (1821-1895) was an English painter and lithographer noted for his portraits of prominent figures. He specialised in portraits and genre scenes and is acclaimed for his series of eminent physicians and surgeons between 1847 and 1852. In 1853 he was appointed ‘lithographer ordinary to Her Majesty the Queen’ and had a studio in Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, where he painted portraits of members of the Royal Family. He exhibited a portrait of Queen Victoria at the Royal Academy in 1855. Maguire married Agnes Inglis in 1847 and they had children including Sidney Calton Maguire (1849-1925) who was also an artist.
