Sir Edward Phillip Solomon KCMG (1845 – 20 November 1914) was a lawyer and politician in the Transvaal Colony and the Union of South Africa. He was a prominent member of the Reform Committee which sponsored the Jameson Raid in 1895, which led to his brief imprisonment in Pretoria.

Woolf Joel (22 Nov 1863-14 March 1898) was Barney Barnato’ s nephew After Barnato’ s death on 14 June 1897 Woolf Joel became the manager of De Beers. He was shot and killed in his office in Johannesburg by a conman named Karl Frederick Kurtze who went with the name of Ludwig von Veltheim in 1898.

The sophistication of this piece even though unmarked points to it being made in England where many of the Randlords, the term coined by the British press, including Woolf Joel lived. Their lavish lifestyles included buying properties and possessions that symbolized wealth and power and one can only wonder if the gold used to make this case originated from his mines in South Africa.
