Cased set of twelve silver gilt commemorative spoons marked for London 1902, with Registered design number –Rd 386663 for the coronation of Edward VII and Alexandra by Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd.
The coronation of Edward VII and his wife, Alexandra, as king and queen of the United Kingdom and the British colonies took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on 9 August 1902.
The spoons represent:
Edward and Alexandra as King and Queen surmounted by the lion and crown which represented British strength and royal authority.
England with St. George and Tudor Rose
Wales with the Red Dragon and Prince of Wales’s Feathers
Scotland with the Lion Rampant and thistle
Ireland with the golden harp and shamrock
Canada with a maple leaf and beaver
South African with an ostrich and elephant
Australia with an emu and the red kangaroo
New Zealand with the four stars representing the Southern Cross and a kiwi
India with a peacock and the tiger
Barbados with the Roman sea god Neptune holding a trident and riding a seashell chariot pulled by sea horses through the waves and a pineapple.
