An English straight pull corkscrew known as the ‘Plume’. This corkscrew was a combined three finger pull and lever pull corkscrew. This example marked ‘PLUME’ on one side and a British registered design lozenge on the other side for 4th April 1879. This was granted to Benjamin Law, Birmingham and unusually carries the later registered design the earlier one having been granted in 1877. As explained in ’Corkscrews: British Registered Designs’ by Frank Ellis and Barbara Ellis on page 53: “This is the date of Law’s subsequent design for an “Ornamental Design for Railway Corkscrew”. This stamp may have deceived others into thinking that copyright protection extended for 3 years from April 1879”. Perfect bladed worm. Circa 1880. (Provenance: Frank Ellis Collection 2014.)
