Kambaku is the Tsonga word for ‘Great Tusker’ or ‘Old Elephant Bull’ a token of great respect for this majestic animal. He covered a large territory between the Timbavati Game Reserve and the Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp, and usually spent the wet season up north.
He was 55 years old when he died, and his tusks were precise mirror images of one another. The left tusk was 259 cm long, 51 cm in base circumference, and weighed 63.2 kg. The right tusk was 265 cm long, 52 cm in circumference, and weighed 64 kg.
Today the tusks are on display at the Elephant Museum in the Letaba Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park.
