A straight pull cast iron corkscrew with a cap lifter incorporated into the handle. This example marked ‘PATENT No 9509’ on the handle. Harold Robert Smyth of 24, Academy Street, Belfast and George Duncan Mackay of Caning Street, Edinburgh were granted a British patent No. 9,509 on the 25th April 1898 for this design. This example with advertising for ‘LIPSEY’S IRISH WHISKY’ on one side and ‘MACLACHLAN’S GLASGOW’ on the other. Perfect helical worm. Circa 1900. (Provenance: Frank Ellis Collection 2014)
