The Old Corkscrew is based in Franschhoek, South Africa. This picturesque town which is nestled in the winelands of the Western Cape is a comfortable fifty minute drive from Cape Town. Franschhoek known as the ’Food and Wine Capital’ of South Africa, boasts more than thirty five restaurants many situated on award winning wine farms.

Opened in 1994 this unique shop is one of the premier antique dealerships in the country. It specialises in exceptional pieces covering silver, decorative arts and the unusual. A strong emphasis on wine related antiques, including Africa’s largest collection of antique corkscrews has ensured it is a firm favourite with both local and international visitors.

An English brass Imperial Pint measure, for ‘ORANJE VRY STAAT’, dated 1875, by Potter, London and numbered 1581. Two proof marks struck to the rim, one being the crown over V.R. which is referred to as the Queen’s, or Sovereign’s Cypher. The V.R stands for “Victoria Regina”, Latin for Queen Victoria.

A magnificent two pillar cast brass corkscrew surmounted with a satyr embracing the handle. The two columns are caryatids and they stand on the bottle collar that allows centering of the perfect centre cut bladed worm. In Italian representations of a satyr as a man, he has a goat's ears, tail, legs and horns. This may suggest Italy as the source for this design. Circa 1860.

The treasure amounting to 1,885 silver coins was discovered in the ceiling of a room above the vestry of Crediton Church in Devonshire.

This vase was probably designed by Philippe Wolfers and the cherub by Isidore De Rudder as part of the "Les Maraudeurs" range, featuring putti playing.
