Hairpins were popular with the Malay woman at the Cape during the 19th century and examples are also found in Straits Chinese silverware made for the nonyas (Malay honorific referring to a married lady). See ‘Straits Chinese Silver, A Collector’s Guide by Ho Wing Meng’ page 114-119 for similar designs.

Johannes Hendricus Beyleveld- Active 1814- 1827

Baptized at the Cape on 13 June 1792. The son of Marthinus Beyleveld of Amsterdam and Abigael Johanna Combrink, daughter of Hermanus Combrink. Married Magdalene Christina Bam, niece of Johannes Andries Bam, the silversmith. His sister Johanna Cornelia married Dominique Baudouin du Moulin, also a silversmith. He was recorded as working at 33 Waterkant from 1814- 1819, then from 31 Waterkant from 1820- 1823 and finally from 53 Loop Street from 1824- 1827.
